I am a former teacher, now working as an advocate for victims of domestic violence. My husband and I have lived in Nevada for about two years. We both grew up in California, and have lived in Hawaii, Oregon, and Washington before moving here. We love to travel and have had the good fortune to visit most of western Europe, the Greek Islands, parts of Asia and the middle East. My husband and I are currently in the process of adopting. We've been approved through the homestudy process and are now searching for a potential birth mother.

A little background

So my husband and I began applying for adoption in summer of 2008. It has been quite a journey so far. We've known for a long time that we wanted children. After our first few years of marriage we were finally ready for all the responsibilities and joys that come with parenthood. We're financially and emotionally stable and I'll be staying home with our child at least for the first few years. We have discovered that we're infertile and now have decided to adopt an infant. The process of qualifying to become adoptive parents is exhaustive, involving background checks, interviews, personal references, fingerprint checks and a lot of waiting. But finally about a month ago we received a letter confirming that we've been APPROVED! Happiest day of our lives so far. Now its all another waiting game and we're trying hard to be patient. Every day, I expect the phone to ring with news of a birthmom who has selected us. While it can be frustrating, it's also very exciting, knowing each morning, we're one day closer to finding the woman who wants us to parent the child she's going to bring into this world. We just keep on keeping on!

  1. How do they pick you? Based on what criteria?

  2. They attempt to determine if you are a good potential parent. They look at everything from your work history to your fingerprint record. They also spend a great deal of time interviewing both husband and wife extensively. Assessing how we deal with problems, what our philosophies are regarding childrearing, and what our own childhood backgrounds are like. From my experience, it seems that they're looking for mature, financially stable people who have similar backgrounds and common life goals. They also look for a lot of feedback from the extended family and friends. They want to know that this child will placed in a family where there are multiple support systems. We knew all along that we were good candidates, but it was still a real relief and cause to celebrate when we got our approval letter.
